Performance Training Goes High Tech in
Dallas
Nestled in The Fitness Club at Midway just
west of the Dallas Parkway, Sports
Performance Team, Inc., opened a
sports-specific training facility on August
1st 2007. Michael Bell, owner of The Fitness
Club says that business for the first month
exceeded their expectations.
Sports Specific Training is becoming more
and more popular at clubs and organizations
around the country. Although sports-specific
training at most places is aimed at
professional athletes or high school and
college athletes, at The Fitness Club the
sports specific training is also for those
who just want to improve their fitness
routines. Sports Specific Training clients
often are former high school and college
athletes who play in adult leagues for
sports such as hockey, basketball or soccer,
but some clients simply just want to improve
their golf game.
“Most people may think that this type of
training is for high-end athletes, but
that’s not true. Once they try it, most
adults love this type of training, and the
results are quicker,” says Ian Gaines, head
trainer at Sports Performance Team of
Dallas. He has found that many of SPT
clients are at a beginner or intermediate
skill level, and they are training just to
get in shape or to play a sport
recreationally.
Sports Specific Training is not just for
training for a sport. Many sports specific
clients at SPT Dallas are families and the
trainer trains Mom, Dad, and the kids. It’s
a great family fun way to stay in shape.
Sports specific training is also very
popular with women at SPT Dallas and most of
the women have never even played an
organized sport before. Regardless of their
reasons for participating in sports-specific
training, the clients are happy with the
results.
At The Fitness Club at Midway it works out

There are six sports specific trainers on

trainers. Performance coaches have to be
Sports Performance Team Certified, with
three years of athletic and sports related
experience. All trainers are required to
perform in-service hours. They strive to

and expanding the trainer’s knowledge on a
frequent basis.
The Programs
One of the sports specific programs is a
baseball camp. “Baseball is a sport with
many different demands on the body,” says
Mike Bell, owner of The Fitness Club.
“Unlike some sports where endurance, power,
leaping ability, or explosive speed is the
most important component, baseball involves
a few motions all with different demands on
the body. The baseball swing, for example,
involves the core, hips, legs, forearms,
wrists, triceps, rear and lateral deltoids,
and a few other smaller muscles.”
Baseball camps are just one of the sports
specific camps that are available. SPT
Dallas also offers speed camps, agility
training and much more. There is also group
or team training available and the trainers
will go on location to assist local schools
with their sports and fitness programs. If

What is Sports Specific Training?
A sports-specific training program involves
focusing on the various skills associated
with a particular activity. It improves and
increases cardio-respiratory endurance,
muscle strength and flexibility. Depending
